After a week-long soccer tournament held by the Latino Student Union (LSU), modeled after the real Copa America championship, team “Rock, Paper, Scissors” was crowned victorious in a 6-3 game. “Rock, Paper, Scissors” is composed of sophomores Marvin Lopez Garcia, Brandon Yih, Cade Fitzsimmons, James Taylor, and Kiran Raina. Five-person teams competed from Monday, April 22 to Friday, April 26 to win the tournament and receive a trophy and medals.
“After each goal I felt really excited,” Kiran said. “I hadn’t really come into the game thinking we were gonna win. We had also lost in the finals last year and I didn’t want a repeat of that.”
“After every goal in the second half was scored, I got more and more excited as the margin between the scores separated further and we got closer and closer to victory,” Brandon said.
This is the second year LSU has hosted its now-annual soccer tournament. The theme varies from year to year based on real-world soccer events. Last year it was named after the World Cup.
The tournament is a way for soccer fans and players to get together and celebrate through scrimmage games.
“I’ve played soccer since I was little and I’ve always watched it with my brother and my dad, so it’s been fun,” LSU president junior Jocelyn Gatica Arellano said. “I’m passionate about the tournament and continuing it from last year.”
LSU also created tutorial videos on their Instagram about how to make miniature origami paper jerseys.
“It’s important to allow students to express themselves and their different interests, like getting together to participate in a fun tournament,” Jocelyn said.
