CORRECTION: On February 10, The Talon will publish a print article in the News section about the Mountain View Los Altos (MVLA) school board voting to offer a freshman physical education (P.E.) exemption or to maintain the current freshman P.E. policy. After the press deadline, the three options were further refined by the administration upon release of the February 9 board agenda, thus making the information about the three options in the print article inaccurate.
The following list of options is the accurate and updated version, according to the February 9 board agenda.
Option one: The MVLA district will continue to require all freshmen to take P.E. regardless of course load or number of school sports taken. As before, only students who are competing at a national level for sports or who are injured may be exempt from taking P.E..
Option two: The MVLA district will exempt freshmen who are enrolled in at least seven courses, which cannot include teacher’s aid, online courses, out-of-district courses, or tutoring, from taking P.E. during their sports seasons.
Option three: The MVLA district will exempt freshmen who are enrolled in two or more sports and are taking at least seven courses, which cannot include teacher’s aid, online courses, out-of-district courses, or tutoring, from taking P.E. during their sports seasons.
The Talon also published an editorial on the topic of the proposed P.E. exemption options on Thursday, February 5.
