Field Hockey Takes Third Place in Leigh Round Up Tournament

This past Friday and Saturday, the girls field hockey team took third place in the Leigh Round Up Tournament, in which twelve teams competed. The Eagles won two games, tied one and lost one.

The team’s first game was on Friday against Saratoga, whom they tied 0-0. Though it was just the first game for Los Altos, the team established a mentality that it would retain throughout the tournament:  it never let a past losses affect its performance, despite having been beaten last week by three of the teams it played.

To kick Saturday off, Los Altos played Del Mar and won with a score of 2-1. Next, they beat Leigh 2-0.

“Both [were] teams we had lost [to] and we came out and were leaps and bounds better than last time,” senior Emily Webb said.

Los Altos’ second goal against Leigh was one highlight of the tournament. Los Altos was up 1-0 and had just earned a short corner.

“The ball was hit to Adera Ahern and she hit [it] with so much power–it caught air and soared right past the keeper,” co-captain senior Nicole Atkins said. “It was perfectly executed.”

The Eagles’ last game was a 0-1 loss to Monta Vista in the semifinals of the tournament. But even this had a silver lining, since Los Altos had played them the previous week and lost by a larger margin.

“I think the tournament overall was significant–I think we played as a completely different team than last week,” Nicole said. “In each game, we came out with intensity and the desire to win.”

Field hockey’s next game is against Archbishop Mitty on Tuesday, September 16. Their home opener comes a week later on September 24 against Monta Vista.
