Field Hockey Clinches Overtime Win Against Willow Glen

On Monday, September 9, the girls varsity field hockey team defeated Willow Glen 2-1 with a clutch overtime performance.

From the start of the game, the team gained possession of the ball and immediately tried to get a shot off. Senior Anneliese Gallagher was the first to score, sending the ball past the goalie and into the cage a few minutes into the first half.

“It was like pinball as we all tried to shoot, but… Anneliese Gallagher got the ball and lifted it above everyone and right into the netting of the goal past the keeper,” co-captain senior Nicole Atkins said.

The Eagles kept this lead for almost the entire game, until Willow Glen scored with a mere 45 seconds left to go, making the score 1-1.

But the team was determined to win as the game led into overtime, and after several shots on goal from multiple players, Anneliese slid another ball past Willow Glen, ending the game 2-1.

“We weren’t going to accept a tie so during the overtime we [played] really hard, executing some great teamwork and stick skills, and scored,” junior Kelsey Moran said. “It was so nice to win our first home game and kick off the season right.”

In the end, the Eagles’ aggressive play and multiple on-goal shots proved to be the determining factor in today’s game.

“Our offense was also able to connect many passes, allowing us to move as a unit down the field,” Nicole said.

The varsity field hockey team is looking forward to the rest of its games with the momentum of its hard-fought first win. Los Altos plays its next game against St. Ignatius on Tuesday, September 9, in an away game at 3:45 p.m.
