District approves increase in substitute pay

On Monday, January 12, the Mountain View Los Altos (MVLA) Board of Directors approved an increase in the pay rate for substitute teachers effective February 2.

Currently, MVLA pays its substitutes at the rate of $125 per day. The change will raise the substitute pay rate to $152 per day, the same rate as Palo Alto Unified School Districts. MVLA’s previous compensation rate of $125 per day had fallen behind the rates that other districts paid their substitutes. The district hopes that raising the rate will allow it to attract higher quality applicants in greater quantities.

Compared to last year’s costs, the change is expected to cost $40,000 more for the remainder of the school year.
