The San Francisco Giants beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 today, October 26, to take a 3-2 lead in the Word Series.

The Giants’ started the scoring off in the second inning. Right fielder Hunter Pence led off with a single, and first baseman Brandon Belt followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice fly by left fielder Travis Ishikawa, shortstop Brandon Crawford brought Pence home on a groundout.

However, Kansas City starter James Shields got out of the inning giving up just the one run.

In the fourth, Crawford got another RBI, driving in third baseman Pablo Sandoval on a bloop single.

It stayed at 2-0 for much of the game, but in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Giants broke it open. Because of the off-day tomorrow, Royals’ manager Ned Yost felt comfortable putting in his famed fireballers from the bullpen in despite the deficit. With this mindset, Yost brought in reliever Kelvin Herrera in the seventh and decided to extend him to the eighth. After back-to-back singles by Pence and Sandoval, Herrera was replaced by set-up man Wade Davis. After a strikeout by Belt, Juan Perez, who came in as a defensive replacement for Ishikawa in left field, drilled a ball that missed leaving the yard by about three inches that brought in both runners. Perez ended up at third, and the next batter, Crawford, singled him home for his third RBI of the night.

Without doubt, the star of the game was Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner. Coming into the game, common thought was that as Bumgarner would go tonight, so would the Giants, and boy, did Bumgarner go. He needed 117 pitches to go all nine innings, giving up no runs on four hits, and striking out eight. At one point he retired ten Kansas City batters in a row.

Kansas City never really got anything started on offense—in no inning did they get more than one runner on base.

The shutout was the first in the World Series since Josh Beckett’s for the Marlins in 2003.

Bumgarner continued his success in the World Series. In the three which he’s played in so far (2010, 2012 and 2014) he has a 4-0 record with a 0.29 ERA in 31 innings pitched.

Tomorrow will be an travel day for the teams, before the series resumes on Tuesday in Kansas City. First pitch will be at 5 p.m. Jake Peavy will start for the Giants and will probably face Yordano Ventura. That will be a rematch of Game 2, which the Royals won.

The Giants just need one more victory to win their third World Series in five years.
