School raises funds for earthquake relief

The school held a fundraiser in response to the recent earthquake in Haiti from Thursday, January 21 to today, Monday, February 1.

Over the span of 12 days, students had the opportunity to donate money to earthquake relief effort during their third period classes. Overall, the school raised $6236.03 in funds for Haiti.

“[The fundraiser] is wonderfully cohesive,” Assistant Principal Cristy Dawson said. “It’s a whole school effort.”

Dawson, with the assistance of teacher aides and office aides, collected donation boxes during third period. Funds were totaled daily and the updated amounts were read over the morning announcements the following day.

According to Dawson, reading the immediate totals “made the urgency of what’s going on big.”

All proceeds of the fundraiser were donated to the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund (HERF), an organization that has supported the development of both economic justice and human rights in Haiti. Teachers Seth Donnelly and Ryan Ikeda have both worked with HERF in the past.

“The cool thing is that 100 percent [of the money raised] is going straight to the people,” Dawson said. “That’s a big thing for us.”

Overall, students and teachers felt strongly about the cause.

“It’s about how to be a better human being,” Dawson said. “It’s a global community. We need to care.”
