Girls Volleyball Dominates Palo Alto in Annual “Dig Pink” Game

On October 16, the girls varsity volleyball team played against Palo Alto High School, the two team’s second league encounter. Los Altos had a decisive victory, winning all three of its sets by large margins.

“We had really great energy and everyone was involved in our win,” senior Joyce Christiansen-Salameh said. “I think we were able to adapt to what [Palo Alto] was throwing at us very successfully.”

The team started strong, winning the first game 25-14. The Vikings reeled Los Altos in a little during the second game, falling only 20-25, but the third and final game was an indisputable win for the Eagles, who took it 25-7.

“We started to lose momentum during the second game, but managed to pull through and stop PALY’s runs of points,” Joyce said. “Our high point was definitely during the third game. The crowd and our team were both really excited, and we definitely fed off all of the energy in the gym to play very clean and aggressive volleyball in that third set.”

The night was also the two schools’ third annual “Dig Pink”, which is put on to honor those with breast cancer and raise awareness and money for the cause. Each team paired up with a charity foundation that pledged to donate a specific amount of money to cancer research for each “dig” that the team’s players made. A dig describes when a player successfully passes a ball when the opposition attacks with a hit.

With this win, Los Altos league record sits at 7-0 and its league standing remains first place. Girls volleyball heads over to Monta Vista to play the Matadors on Tuesday, October 21.
