Girls Volleyball Ekes Out Win Over Homestead in Nailbiter

On Wednesday, October 22, the varsity girls volleyball team won its home match against Homestead High School. Though it was a tight game throughout, the Eagles ultimately won 3-2 in the closely contested five-set game.

“Going into the game we felt pretty confident, [because] we have beaten this team twice already,” captain senior Carmen Annevelink said. “But we knew that they were going to come out tough. We are the only team ahead of them in league.”

The Eagles and Mustangs were closely matched right out of the gate. Los Altos was able to take the first set by the small margin of 25-23, but a series of small player errors made it difficult for the team to keep up a winning strike for the next two sets. Sets two and three ended 21-25 and 24-26 in favor of Homestead, respectively, threatening to end the game.

The last two sets of the night saw the Eagles move past the obstacles that had set them back in the previous sets and come back to clinch the game. Though Los Altos found its footing, sets four and five both went down to the wire, ending 25-24 and 15-12, respectively.

“Despite a hard night from the refs and many of our players having an off-night, we were able to come together and get the points we needed,” Carmen said. “It was reassuring that even on an off-night against a tougher team we were still able to prevail. Hopefully this is a wake up call as we finish league and go into post-season and play harder teams that we must play every point and give the game all our effort.”

With the win, girls volleyball extends its league record to 9-0. The Eagles play Los Gatos next in an away game on Tuesday, October 28.
