Wrestling Falls to Los Gatos

In its final match of the season, the wrestling team lost to Los Gatos High School by a score of 33-51. With the loss, the Eagles have dropped to 0-6 in the competitive De Anza League of SCVAL. However, with league finals and CCS down the road, the team has not lost sight of its goals despite its shortcomings.

Following the match, the team honored senior Paul Hernandez for his dedication and contribution. Paul, who has been suffering from a nagging shoulder injury, was forced to injury default his match. In a final gesture, Paul removed his wrestling shoes and headgear, placing them in the center of the mat–a sportwide symbol for the conclusion of a wrestler’s career.

The match itself was marked by tense yet exciting matches. Though the young Eagles squad was at times overwhelmed by both the physical and technical prowess of the Wildcats, the members displayed ample instances of heart and perseverance.

Among others, junior James Sobrino and freshman Javier Contreras stood out, snagging important victories in the process. In a dominant effort, James dispatched his opponent, securing the pin in under a minute. Javier’s match, though closer, was a significantly longer affair.

“The season is not over,” coach Randy Jimenez said. “There is still lots of room for improvement.”
