On a Friday in which each of the baseball players had just been excused for spring break, you would expect the team to be disinterested and ready to go home. Yet, it was the opposite. As the warm up music blasted in the dugout, the players were dancing, air guitaring and lipsyncing— everyone could tell this team was feeling it. The scoreline exemplified this maybe better than anything as the Eagles took down the Saratoga Falcons by the score of 11-5.

After seeing their warm-up, the Eagles came out as expected in the first inning, putting up a three run lead in the process. Despite their offensive success, it was matched, if not outdone, by the all-around performance of senior starting pitcher Trevor Rodgers. He had a little trouble in the second and third innings hitting his spots, but his defense was able to back him up. But as any good pitcher does, Trevor was able to take advantage of his offspeed pitchers to get batters either swinging out of their shoes or caught looking. He left the game after six solid innings pitched, striking out five and giving up just one earned run.

“I think in the second and third inning I wouldn’t make the best two-strike pitches, not throwing the pitch exactly where I wanted it.” said Trevor, “[But], my changeup and slider were on today and it was helping me keep the batters unbalanced at the plate. All in all, I felt good on the mound and it is nice knowing the defense behind me will make plays when they’re needed.”

But it was not just the arm of Trevor that stood out, it was also his appearances at the plate that proved pivotal in the outcome of the game.  In the top of the fifth with 5-3 lead, Trevor stepped up to the plate and blasted the ball into the right field gap to hit a leadoff triple.  

“I just simplified everything and put the ball in play. [Saratoga’s pitcher] threw me a fastball and I just stayed short to it and hit the ball hard in the gap.” said Trevor, “I think starting off the inning with a big hit is always great because it brings the energy and gets the dugout into the game.”

That was followed up by the play of the game— acrobatic squeeze bunt by senior shortstop Paul Myers that scored a runner, advanced a runner to third, and got Paul on base all at once.

After that the Eagles were able to keep the momentum and went on to put six runs on the board in the space of two innings, highlighted by a two-run home run by sophomore Colin Homanhigh over the left field fence, the first of his varsity career. However, the offensive output was truly spread throughout the lineup: the team combined for six extra-base hits, and six different players notched RBIs.

The win puts the Eagles in a good spot going into Spring Break. Having won three straight games and seven of their last eight, they find themselves in third place in the De Anza League, and are in a great position to get into CCS.

The next league game for Los Altos is against Milpitas at home on April 20. The next home game for Los Altos is a non-conference match against cross town rivals Mountain View, something any fan would be sorry to miss.
