Weekly Sports Update–4/15 to 4/21

The Talon covers how Los Altos sports teams have been doing this past week.

Volleyball

Volleyball went undefeated this week in its matches against Wilcox and Santa Clara. The Eagles defeated Wilcox 3-1 on Wednesday, April 17, and won 3-0 against Santa Clara on Friday, April 19. With back to back wins, the Eagles certainly are building on their momentum as they approach the end of their season. On Tuesday, April 23, the Eagles will be facing Eastside College Prep in an away game at 5:30.

Track and Field

The Eagles had two major meets this week, competing against cross-town rival Mountain View High School for the first time in the season on Thursday, April 18, and in the Top 8 meet on Friday, April 19. Boys varsity and junior varsity claimed easy wins against the Spartans, while girls varsity and junior varsity lost in close contests. At CCS Top 8, there were a number of incredible performances.

As for boys relays, the 4×100 relay team of senior Chris Tien, junior Will Scheetz, senior Tyler Polen and senior Willem Van Eck placed fourth overall with a mark of 43.96, the 4×400 relay ran a 3:27.40, a four second personal record, and the team of Arthur Bogdanovich, Willem Van Eck, Kelly McConell and Konrad Niemiec narrowly edged Wilcox to take third place. Individually, junior Konrad Niemiec placed 11th in the 800 with a 1:59.75, and Willem ran a 22.90 200 race, placing him 12th overall,

Then on the girls side, senior Claire Bowie finished 10th overall in the girls varsity 800 with a 2:20.27, and the girls 4×400 relay team of senior Claire, sophomore Anneliese Gallagher, freshman Lauren Jacob and sophomore Romy Aboudarham.

The Eagles will compete against Milpitas in an away meet on Thursday, April 25.

Tennis

The varsity boys tennis team had only one match this week against Palo Alto, which they beat 6-1. It was an easy match, with both doubles and singles winning their matches easily. The Eagles have finished second in league, and are sending their players to SCVAL’s today, April 23. At SCVAL’s, the team is sending two singles players and two doubles teams, which they hope will qualify for CCS.

Softball

Softball did not have any games this week and the team’s league record stands at 5-2. Over Spring Break, Los Altos crushed Fremont High School 13-0 in a non-league game; the Lady Eagles now have won seven of their last eight games. The team currently stands at number 16 in the CCS Softball Rankings, just behind Carmel High School and ahead of North Salinas High School. Los Altos plays Palo Alto High School away on Tuesday, April 23.

Lacrosse

The Eagles played two matches this week, coming off a streak of four losses. The team challenged Leland High School in an away game on Tuesday, April 16 and Gunn at home on Friday, April 19. Los Altos was able to come back from its previous losses and defeat both Leland and Gunn easily, winning 13-4 and 14-7, respectively. The team is looking to continue its strong performance by making it to league playoffs and becoming the league champions.

Lacrosse’s next game is at home against Woodside High School on Tuesday, April 23.

Golf

The golf team competed in their final match of the season on Monday, April 22. The team faced off against Mountain View and took a tough loss by 21 total strokes. This loss takes the team to a 5-6-1 record for the season. Junior Bryan Lai is disappointed with the team’s performance their season, given their strong team.

“We should have been better than we were, and I think a lack of focus is the reason we didn’t play up to our potential,” Bryan said.

Gymnastics

The gymnastics team had two meets this week, first against Burlingame High School, Mercy High School and Mountain View High School on Monday, April 15, and then against Mountain View and Saint Francis High School on Friday, April 19. On Monday, varsity placed second behind Mountain View, and junior varsity was able to clinch first place. On Friday, the Eagles managed to secure first place on the junior varsity level and second place for varsity.

Junior Estefani Gomez placed first in bars and all-around and also placed in every other event in junior varsity. For varsity, senior Kelli Yamaguma placed fifth in both beam and vault, making her the only Eagle to place. As the season progresses, the team will be working hard in order to defeat its toughest competitor, Saint Francis.

Baseball

The Eagles had a tough week, in which they finished 0-3. On Wednesday, April 17, they faced off against Saratoga, and lost 9-17. On Friday, the team played Saratoga again, but lost 0-6. On Saturday, April 20, they played Cupertino and lost 0-3. Looking ahead, they have to win next week in order to better their chances of qualifying for a spot in CCS. Even if they do win, however, Los Altos will be depending on the successes and failures of other teams to get them into CCS playoffs.

Swimming and Diving

Both swimming and diving faced off against Palo Alto High School this week: diving on Monday, April 15, and swimming on Tuesday, April 16. All four swim teams were dealt resounding defeats by the swimming powerhouse, with varsity boys losing 40-127, varsity girls losing 55-115, junior boys varsity losing 44-123 and junior girls varsity losing 51-121. Both boys and girls varsity teams now have a league record of 1-3. Diving lost similarly, against the well-practiced Palo Alto team. Diving will face off against Monta Vista High School and Saratoga High School at home on Wednesday, April 24. Swimming will challenge Monta Vista and Saratoga on Thursday, April 25, in its last dual meet before league trials and league finals at Monta Vista.

Badminton

The badminton team headed over to Gunn High School this week to challenge the badminton powerhouse on Tuesday, April 16. The Eagles were defeated 8-22. Badminton has been struggling in the face of tough competition ever since it moved up to the upper De Anza Division this season. Los Altos will play Monta Vista High School on Tuesday, April 23 in an away meet.
