Weekly Sports Update–4/1 to 4/7

The Talon covers how Los Altos sports teams have been doing this past week.

Track and Field

The Los Altos High track team defeated Saratoga by a wide margin across all fronts on April 4. The victory improved the Eagles’ season record to 2-2. Their success against Saratoga was followed by the Pacific Grove Invitational, in which around 40 members of Eagle’s varsity, junior varsity and frosh/soph athletes competed. The Eagles strong overall performance at this meet is a positive indication of their overall readiness for major competitions to come, such as CCS. Spring Break is a “training week” for the team, which is expected to remain in top form for the team’s upcoming meet against Mountain View on April 18.

Volleyball

The boys volleyball team had one league match this week against Saratoga High School. The Eagles defeated Saratoga decisively, winning three successive sets against the Falcons. The win bolstered the team’s league record to a promising 5-2 and was reflective of the team’s great improvement in performance, physical and mental strength, technical skill and cohesion as a team. If the team plays just as well during the rest of its season, it will have a chance at earning the league title. The team hopes to get one step closer to the championship title by winning its remaining matches after Spring Break, starting with its home game against Sacred Heart on Tuesday, April 16.

Tennis

Following a razor close defeat to Saratoga, boys varsity tennis has entered the week of Spring Break with a record of 9-2. This defeat marked the Eagles’ second match versus Saratoga this season, and while they emerged victorious from their first encounter, their second match did not share the same result. The defeat has caused the Eagles’ league ranking to drop slightly, and now Monta Vista occupies the top spot in the league. The team aimed to reclaim their former preeminence against Cupertino on April 4. Unfortunately, this match was cancelled, leaving the team with a week’s rest over break.

Softball

Coming off a three win streak from last week, the softball team was able to continue its momentum this week, defeating Santa Clara High School in an away game on Tuesday, April 2 1-0 and crushing Monta Vista at home in 7-0 fashion on Thursday, April 4. The Eagles also participated in the Wilcox Tournament on Saturday, April 6 and played against Live Oak High School and Hillsdale High School. The team picked up an easy win against the Live Oak Acorns, winning 8-1, but fell to Hillsdale in a close match 4-6. Despite moving up to the De Anza League, Los Altos is looking strong, as they have won six of their seven past games. The team plays Fremont in an away game on Tuesday, April 9.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse defeated Carlmont High School this Wednesday 6-5 in a home game. On Friday, the Eagles played Saratoga in a very close game that ended with junior Dave Huffman making a save in the final seconds and allowing the Eagles to win 8-7. Junior Casey Hanni has been leading the team on the defensive end while sophomore AJ Guralas has been a powerful offensive force. The team is looking to continue its strong performance by making it to league playoffs and becoming the league champions.

Golf

The golf team played against two other schools in league matches this week, competing against Fremont High School on Tuesday, April 2 and Cupertino High School on Thursday, April 4. The Eagles defeated Fremont by over 20 strokes, with juniors Andrew Bray and Spencer Katchman and freshman Carina Burdick receiving honorable mentions for finishing the course in 41 strokes, 40 strokes and 42 strokes, respectively. Los Altos defeated Cupertino as well. The golf team’s record now stands at five wins, three losses and one tie.

Gymnastics

The gymnastics team had its second meet of the season on April 2 against Lowell High School, West High School and John C. Kimball High School at the Tracy & Kimball Classic Gym in Tracy. The other schools proved to be stiff competition, and the team was at a disadvantage with Los Altos missing one gymnast from both the varsity and junior varsity teams. However,  varsity still managed to place third overall while junior varsity placed second. None of Los Altos’ gymnasts placed lower than fourth individually. With a large team and the addition of three talented freshmen, the outlook for CCS remains bright.

Baseball

Baseball was supposed to have three games this week, but the team’s game against Monterey at home on Thursday, April 4 was cancelled on account of rain. The other two games were both against Santa Clara High School. The Eagles handed Santa Clara a crushing 9-1 defeat on Wednesday, April 3. Los Altos was able to defeat Santa Clara a second time on Friday as well, winning 5-2. These victories came after the team’s tough losses to Palo Alto High School the week before. The Eagles hope to continue their comeback with strong team play after Spring Break and hope to improve their league record of 5-5.

Swimming and Diving
Neither swimming nor diving had a meet this week. The swim team has been struggling in its first few meets this season, largely because it has moved up a league, which has left the team adjusting to the fierce competition. The Eagles’ next competition will be an away meet against Palo Alto High School. Diving will compete on Monday, April 15 and swimming will compete on Tuesday, April 16.

Badminton

The badminton team only played one league game this week, which was against Saratoga High School on April 2. The Eagles fell 6-24, but the Eagles still had some outstanding performances. Senior Sarah Corner and freshman Alice Dai both claimed victories in girls singles and the freshman team of Stephanie Lee and Helena Chi won girls doubles. Members of the varsity team also participated in the Silver Creek Tournament on Saturday, April 6, in San Jose, against a dozen other schools in the doubles only competition. The boys doubles team of junior Max Chi and sophomore Louis Hinnant were able to advance all the way to the semifinals. The Eagles’ next league match will be an away game against Gunn on Tuesday, April 16.
