Volleyball Grinds Out First Season Win

It took the girls volleyball team four games in a best of five series to put away the opposing Westmont team in its first home game of the season tonight, September 9.

Both teams were highly competitive and the five sets were full of long rallies, good digs and  some impressive kills. There were, however, occasional faults.

“We all were a little off tonight and that showed in our careless mistakes such as the incredible amount of net touches.” senior Meghan McDermott said. “We made way too many errors from hitting errors to service errors, which we all need to clean up as a team.”

Even with seven net touches called in the first game, the Lady Eagles were still able to pull off a 25-18 victory.

Los Altos was not as fortunate in the second game as the team went down 1-7 in the beginning of the set. However, a key timeout called by head coach Peter Kim allowed the Eagles to tie it back up at nine all. This back and forth action continued until the very end, with Westmont pulling through to win 25 to 21.

Los Altos was able to bounce back, winning the third game handedly with a final score of 25-15. Junior Carmen Annevelink, who played a complete and powerful game tonight, made multiple kills.

“Even though we didn’t play our best tonight, having a crowd at our home games really helps us with home team advantage and adds to the positive energy in the gym,” Meghan said.

Many long rallies made up the fourth game as neither team could take the lead. Finally, Los Altos broke through with a lead of 20 to 17 which put them in position for Annevelink to end the game on one of her patented kills.

The team looks to further develop and continue to get better to prepare for league play and hopefully postseason contention.

“We have some tough competition down the line, but I think we stand a really good chance of coming out with a great record by the end of the season,” Meghan said.

The Lady Eagles, with an impressive win over Westmont, will focus on taking it to Burlingame High School this Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m.
