Varsity Girls Water Polo Defeats Monta Vista

Varsity girls water polo beat Monta Vista on today, September 22 with a final score of 18 to 5.

“It’s fun to be a good-enough team that everyone gets to play,” senior Carrie Beyer said.

Although Carrie helped carry out the offense by being one of the leading scorers in the game, the team really shone on defense, shutting down Monta Vista’s offense and denying them so much as a solid shot on goal during the entire first quarter. Between their substantially greater speed and cleaner passing, things looked good for LAHS from the start. The quarter ended with a score of 6 to 0.

The second quarter began with another victorious sprint for the team followed by a six on five (where one of the players was removed for the duration of the offense) to the Eagles’ advantage. Monta Vista took a strong shot while up on a drive, but goalie senior Nicole Larsen easily made the first block of the game.

“I supported my team,” Nicole said, in reference to the fact that Monta Vista rarely made it close enough to seriously threaten LAHS defense.

The second quarter ended with a score of 10 to 0.

LAHS began making major substitutions in the third quarter, with confidence in their substantial lead. Yet, they still continued to ratchet up the points. Monta Vista made its first goal in a five meter penalty shot during the third quarter. The opposing players quickly followed their hard fought modicum of success with a chancy lob on goal that managed to sneak its way in through the top right corner and their first solid shot from set. The third quarter ended 14 to 3.

The final quarter wound down with respectable play on each team’s behalf. Senior Katy Schaffer continued her exemplary offense scoring a total of eight goals throughout the game. Senior Erica Fossum, who is new to water polo, also scored her first in game goal of the season.

“People get to develop their skills if they’re new to the sport, it’s nice to see people get better,” Katy said. “It’s all about fun this season.”
