Varsity Badminton Competes in Irvington High School Tournament

The varsity badminton team participated in the Irvington High School Badminton Tournament in Fremont yesterday. The number one and two positions of each category (boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles) competed against those of 13 other schools.

“We take [the team] to badminton tournaments to expose them to a wider rider range of style and play other than the 12 matches that we have for the year,” coach Stefaan Lodge said.

The tournament was played in two brackets. Each player or team was guaranteed two games, the first determining what bracket the team would play in, either winner’s or consolation. After this was determined, the tournament proceeded with single elimination games. Although several players managed to win at least one game, no members of the Los Altos High School team were able to win a trophy.

The badminton team has played three matches so far this season, all of them resulting in losses in the newly joined upper De Anza Division.

“It’s a work in progress,” Lodge said. “For the rest of the teams we have coming up this year, I fully expect that we’ll be making some major improvements.”

The team’s next match will be a home game this Tuesday against Monta Vista, the top ranked team in the division.
