Tennis Continues Undefeated Streak in League, Defeats Mountain View

After several hard-fought matches early in the season, the boys tennis team is currently undefeated in league with a record of 8-0. This week’s big wins against Mountain View High School (MVHS), Lynbrook High School, and Los Gatos High School mark a huge run by the Eagles this season–a season that could be the best in school history.

The Eagles started off this week with a bang, defeating MVHS 7-0 in a home match on Monday, March 18. The team won almost all dominant victories except for a close match by number four singles player sophomore Ovidiu Fritsch. Ovidiu won in three sets, of which the third included a 10-8 score. Although the match was not an in-league matchup, it provided an opportunity for the Eagles to prove themselves against their rivals and get a tune-up match as they headed into the week.

On Tuesday, March 19, the Eagles faced Lynbrook in what they knew would be a competitive match. Despite the interference of adverse weather conditions, the team managed to achieve a 4-2 before the match was rained out.

“Near the end it got a little bit windy and some of us lost our focus,” Ovidiu said. “That is something I think the team can improve on as a whole.”

The victory also shed light on the team’s ability to persevere through unfavorable circumstances. In addition to losing key players like junior Christian Beck and senior John Dai due to illness, the Eagles had to contend with Lynbrook’s number one singles player, who is one of the top players in the country. The Eagles’ victory proved that the team is ready to play at the highest level as it heads into the second half of the season.

Today, March 21, the team closed out its successful week with a dominant 5-2 victory against Los Gatos. Although the team still suffered a from spotty lineup due to Christian and John’s continued absences, the Eagles were able to win handedly.

“Overall I think we could just work on keeping the fighting instinct up,” Co-captain senior Spencer Simonides said. “In some matches when we fell behind we would crumble, but in this Tuesday’s match, we showed showed really good fight by coming back.”

The team’s coaching staff has also been an integral component of the team’s success. Coach  Bill Wong had no prior experience as a coach, but as the father of renowned Stanford tennis player and LAHS alum Jon Wong, Coach Wong has brought his knowledge of the sport to the school and is ready to improve the team to the best of his abilities.

“Bill, really cares about the team’s success,” Ovidiu said.

Spencer also mentioned Coach Wong’s openness.

“Though he had no coaching experience before, … he is very open to suggestions from the team,” Spencer said.

The Eagles’ recent success is a continuation of last week’s victories. The team defeated Monta Vista High School 4-3 on Tuesday, March 12, marking the first time the Eagles have ever defeated the Monta Vista in a league match. The team also handedly defeated Saratoga High School on Thursday, March 14.

All in all, the Eagles have thus far had an extremely successful season. They have secured two victories over frequent rival Monta Vista, and after strong showings against Lynbrook and Mountain View, the team is on the precipice of a run at the league title.
