Teacher workshops to be held on minimum days

Teachers will participate in two workshops on Wednesday, September 23 and Thursday, September 24. Students will have a minimum day schedule on those days.

The workshops will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.

According to English teacher Galen Rosenberg, the staff will be watching a diversity film on Wednesday and “talking about it.” The workshop will take place in the Eagle Theatre.

The film was created by the Cultural Proficiency Team and several students last year. It was originally scheduled to air in May, but the screening was postponed due to several teachers’ concerns that the staff was not adequately prepared.

Teachers will view the video from 1:30 p.m. to 2:10 p.m. The viewing will be followed by a discussion. English teacher Susana Herrera described the activity as a Socratic seminar with “teachers as the students.”

The Wednesday workshop will be concluded with a discussion on how the teachers want to organize the screening of the video and the subsequent activity. The staff will vote in the cafeteria on the final decisions.

According to Rosenberg, Thursday’s workshops will be focused on “staff training related to reading strategies”.

A Strategic Literacy Institute (SLI) Activity will take place in the cafeteria from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. After a short break, department conversations will occur in the cafeteria, library and tutorial center to discuss the activity
