Swimming Competes in CCS Finals

Both the boys and girls swimming teams participated in the CCS (Central Coast Section) trials and finals on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11. The teams ranked 22nd overall.

The girls team had trouble after they had to replace several key swimmers. Freshman Samantha Waln, sophomore Ophelia Yue and junior Casey Vanneman were not able to participate due to health issues.

“It really hurt that we were missing [those swimmers],” junior Amanda Choy said. “Although the substituting swimmers were certainly skilled, we just couldn’t produce as effective results as usual.”

The boys team struggled with attendance. The smaller number of swimmers participating in events restricted the amount of points that the team could score.

However, one swimmer shined through the competition: freshman Albert Gwo. Albert was the only swimmer to final at an individual event. While his skill and technique certainly contributed to his success, Albert believes that the support from his peers also made a difference.

“I feel honored as an individual to be able to attend such a nice school with everyone supporting me,” Albert said. “My friends wished me good luck and encouraged me to perform my best. … When I compete, I know I have the support of my friends, so it gives me confidence.”

Despite the results, the team remains optimistic about its next season.

“I look forward to a fun season next year, and I will say for everyone that we will miss the seniors that made the biggest difference for our team this year,” Albert said. “Along with more fun, I expect that we will push past many of the swimmers that finaled at CCS and [make more top finishes].”
