Students for Haiti Solidarity Club Hosts Open Mic Night

The Students for Haiti Solidarity Club hosted an Open Mic Night for Haiti from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, January 21 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church on Grant Road.

The club raised about $500 at the event from $5 ticket sales and from selling pastries, and is continuing to sell $1 bracelets and $15 shirts to raise funds until their trip to Haiti over February break.

“The money raised from ticket sales goes directly to our distribution funds,” said Students for Haiti Solidarity Club President senior Libby Strichartz.

Performers included junior Laura Delamare singing and playing a ukulele, juniors Carrie Beyer and Sophia Steffens lassoing with bull whips, and sophomore Noah Schramm playing his saxophone. Various other poets and bands also performed.

The funds from the Open Mic Night will fund the SOPUDEP School in Haiti, though the club also helps support an orphanage and women’s organization.

In addition, the club has received donations of medical supplies, and AYSO donated soccer balls and gear for the children.

“When we went down there last time we happened to bring down a couple soccer balls and that’s all the kids want,” Libby said. “They want the food of course, but they go crazy over anything to do with soccer.”

The club will also be selling $5 raffle tickets off school campus until their trip. Prizes include an iPad and restaurant certificates and the money raised aids club members in travel costs.
