Students Chosen as Presidential Scholar Candidates

Seven students from the MVLA district were recently selected as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program by The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the Department of Education.

Seniors Kevin Friend, Vivian Hua, Matthew Orton, Adam Warmoth and Rowan Zellers of LAHS and Reyna Hulett and Max McCarthy of Mountain View High School (MVHS) were among the 3,000 candidates selected nationwide.

If interested, candidates must complete and submit candidacy materials for review, which includes essays, self-assessments, secondary school reports and transcripts. They will be evaluated on academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership, service activities and the quality and content of their essay.

Less than 150 scholars are chosen in the end from the pool of 3,000 initial candidates and the scholars will be honored in June in Washington D.C. with all expenses paid. There, they will meet with government officials, educators, authors, musicians and scientists. Their trip also includes visits to museums and monuments as well as recitals, receptions and ceremonies.

“I’m honored to have been selected as a candidate for such a prestigious award and although it would be awesome to be selected to go to Washington and meet the President, I’m glad just to have made it this far,” Adam said. “I look forward to seeing if I will get to represent my school, state and country by being selected.”
