Statewide school mask mandate lifted

California is no longer requiring masks in schools and childcare centers starting Saturday, March 12.

Governor Gavin Newsom also announced that masks will no longer be required indoors for unvaccinated individuals, effective today. However, masks will continue to be required for all in some “high-transmission” settings, like public transit, health care facilities and long-term care facilities. It is unclear how long Santa Clara County will keep its own mandates in place.

“California continues to adjust our policies based on the latest data and science, applying what we’ve learned over the past two years to guide our response to the pandemic,” Newsom said. “Masks are an effective tool to minimize spread of the virus and future variants, especially when transmission rates are high. We cannot predict the future of the virus, but we are better prepared for it and will continue to take measures rooted in science to keep California moving forward.”
