Sports Medicine May Be Added to Course List

The administration is considering adding a sports medicine course next fall. According to counselor Judy Prothro, this proposal is tentative and depends on interest level. Administrators expect the class to be a success since many students like the idea, according to Assistant Principal Morenike O’Neal.

According to O’Neal, athletic trainer Jasmine Gittenes suggested the course, and there has been discussion about it for two years. Funding would come from the Regional Occupational Program (ROP).

According to O’Neal, one issue being discussed is whether the class would count for science credit or elective credit.

If the class is added, Gittenes will likely teach it. She earned her undergraduate degree in athletic training and will complete a master’s in sports medicine this May. However, Gittenes is participating in a graduate program that assigns her to work as an athletic trainer at the school for only two years, and this is her second year. Gittenes hopes that the class will be added, as she “would definitely love to stay at the school next year.” She would teach about common injuries and their treatments.

“This class would really benefit all the students at the school,” junior Sean Small said. “It is good to know about your body, especially if you are an athlete. You would learn how to deal with injuries and how to prevent them too.”

Because the class is an ROP course, students would have to be at least 16 to register.

“I want to go into sports medicine after high school,” sophomore Jacqui Treiger said. “This class would be a great way for me to get some experience before college.”
