School hires JV girls soccer coach

Pritam Steiner has been hired as the new JV girls soccer coach for this upcoming season.

According to Steiner, her strength as a coach will come from the experiences she has from 16 years of playing soccer.

“I have played for many different coaches with many different styles [and] backgrounds,” Steiner said. “Coaching has been something I have wanted to do for a long time. I have immense love for the game and am so happy [to be coaching].”

She was hired at the start of this school year in order to replace the former JV girls soccer coach Carlos Montoya.

“My hopes are to have fun, to be a positive influence on the girls, to win league and to be a stepping stone for the girls that will be moving on to play varsity,” Steiner said.

Boys water polo plays tournament

The varsity boys water polo team played in the Monta Vista Tournament on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31.

The team beat Carmel High School and Tokay High School but lost to Soquel High School.

Many of the players thought the team did well and said it was a nice warm-up for the CCS finals, which will be held on Saturday, November 21.

“We [did] pretty well,” senior Adlai Katzenberg said. “It [was] a good opportunity for us to tune our offense and maybe practice some new tricks before CCS.”

According to Adlai, Coach Ed Samuels has only planned to continue “having hard workouts” so the team can get the “most out of a short taper” in the time between the tournament and CCS finals.

“We train two-and-a-half to three hours a day and go very hard,” Samuels said.

School hosts SCVAL varsity girls tennis

The school hosted the first day of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) tournament for varsity girls tennis on Tuesday, November 3.

The top two singles and doubles from each school in the De Anza Division of SCVAL played in the tournament.

Seniors Jamie Eng and Alex Kouvelas and sophomore Lauren Liu competed in singles, while senior Vienna Rye with sophomore Ali Dyer and seniors Anne Reid and Sarah Loebner played in doubles. Although none of the players made it past the first round, the girls played well overall.

“Most of the players went to three sets in the tournament,” varsity coach Hung Nguyen said. “With so many good players, it is a hard tournament. We did the best we could.”

Senior Jamie Eng won the SCVAL Championships Sportsmanship Award.
