In an emotional and fast-paced game, the boys water polo team narrowly lost to the Mountain View High School Spartans 9-10. The Eagles sought revenge after conceding their first season loss to the Spartans, but came just short of the victory.

“They played a really good game,” goalkeeper senior Afsheen Khosraviani said. “We just didn’t play our best. I’m a little upset about that.”

Mountain View scored the first goal in the game, a cheeky punch-in that put them ahead at the start. The Eagles rebounded, however, returning with two goals that gave them a 2-1 lead.
The scoreline stayed fairly level for the rest of the half, with goals going back and forth between both sides. When the half ended and the water cleared, the teams were tied 4-4.

The Spartans set the pace for the third quarter with an two early goals, but the Los Altos squad was quick to rally back after Mountain View’s lead scorer was ejected from the game, scoring two goals to put the Eagles back on the scoreboard. Junior Jordan Stout put Los Altos ahead with a shot from distance, but Mountain View tied up shortly after. The third quarter ended 7-7.

With emotions running hot, both teams looked to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles were first to put one in the back of the net, as senior Paul Bergevin slid the ball in to put the team ahead. However, Mountain View returned the concession with three more goals, putting a two goal gap between them and the Eagles. Despite a beautiful backhand goal by Captain senior Ian McColl, the Los Altos squad failed to bridge the gap in the last moments of the game.

“We came out energized [in the fourth quarter],” Ian said. “We knew it was a new ball game … they were down one of their top scorers. But they put us down, and once we got down, the energy shifted and we were gone at that point.”
