Power Outage Interrupts AP Tests

A power outage early yesterday morning, May 6, interrupted and postponed the Advanced Placement tests for Computer Science and Spanish Language and Culture. The test will be offered again on the AP’s late testing date, May 22, with Computer Science students beginning at 7:30 a.m. and Spanish Language and Culture Students beginning at 12:30 a.m.

Around 7 a.m., Mike Woodworth, the school’s head of Maintenance and Operation, noticed a brief power outage that was restored quickly. The power soon went out again and Woodworth contacted PG&E to find out there was car accident at 3 a.m. on Homestead Road in Sunnyvale that took out a transformer. This resulted in the immediate loss of electricity to 500 homes and businesses in the area and spread to 6000 as the morning progressed. Woodworth was informed that power would not be restored until 11 a.m. but it returned at around 9:30 am.

All Computer Science tests were compromised because College Board requires that all testing rooms are provided with adequate lighting and one of the Computer Science testing rooms was too dark. Further communication with College Board called for the Spanish test to be halted as well, despite sufficient natural light in the library.

“I didn’t feel comfortable shutting down the Spanish test but I had to because College Board told me,” Corzine said. “I did explain to them multiple times that we had light in there and that you could see clearly and we were working off of battery power with our CD’s. The Spanish test was the decision of College Board.”
