Powderpuff Tournament Comes to Close, Seniors Shut Down Juniors

Los Altos’ annual Powderpuff football tournament ended today, October 11, on its third day of competition. The first day of competition pitted the juniors against the freshman class. The juniors secured a comfortable 18-6 win, with junior Rebecca Andrews scoring two touchdowns and junior Carmen Annevelink contributing one.

Day two of Powderpuff saw the seniors shut out the sophomore class in emphatic fashion and win 27-0.

The seniors’ momentum from the previous day carried through to today’s game, with the senior class dominating the juniors with ease. By the end of the game, the seniors emerged with a 25-6 win. This is the first time in three years that the juniors have suffered a loss in the finals.

Much of the championship game was characterized by a rock solid defense and an overall well-coordinated game on the senior side.

“We had good communication and positive attitudes even [when] we messed up,” senior Sophia Hyver said. “Roxanne Rogers and Nathalie Preciado made a solid [defense] line for my runs down the sidelines… shutting down the strongest players on the junior team.”

Senior Julia Goupil played a crucial role in the game and scored two touchdowns.

“For some reason, Julia was open every play,” Rebecca said.

However, the seniors’ performance was not perfect and was plagued with several blunders as well.

“We dropped so many passes,” senior Sophia Hyver said.

While the seniors put together an overall cohesive game, the junior class suffered from a number of problems — most notably, an incomplete roster.

“Of all the teams, we were the most rag-tag,” Rebecca said. “We didn’t even have the full 12 players… so [junior] Dylan [Kreisman] had to sub in.”

The junior class’ relatively penetrable defense, coupled with a number of smaller tactical errors allowed for senior domination.

“We did not block at all so our running game was nonexistent. We were a little rough throwing the ball. We probably should have practiced more,” Rebecca said.

As the game neared its end, the juniors scored a touchdown shortly after the seniors’ third. The juniors, in spite of the difficulties that precluded a third straight championship victory, remain proud of the touchdown.

“I’m really proud of us for scoring one touchdown,” Rebecca said.

The juniors will return next year bearing in mind the experience from this year.

“We should try to organize our team earlier so that we can figure everything out,” Rebecca said.
