Coffee and tea raise Senior Class funds

Throughout the month of February, the Senior Class will sell Grounds for Change coffee and tea, which is certified organic, fair trade coffee ($12 per bag) and tea ($6 per bag).

The money will go toward upcoming senior events such as Prom and the Senior Picnic. The location and food for Prom have already been paid for, as well as the buses for the Senior Picnic.

“Our goal is at $1,000,” Senior Class Vice President Tyler Stout said. “It will go toward decorations, a better DJ and lighting for Prom. Any excess money will go toward other clubs.”

Tea and coffee can be purchased from any senior class council member.
“The Senior Class has made a lot of progression in paying for Prom and the Senior Picnic,” Tyler said.

Math Department replaces textbooks

The Math Departments of LAHS and Mountain View High School are changing their AP Calculus AB and BC textbooks for next year. Although the Department has not made a final decision on which textbook to use, head of the Math Department Katherine Robertson said it will be a more current textbook that caters to the new technology of the calculators.

“It’s simply a matter of the old textbook being outdated,” Robertson said.

Calculus BC AP teacher Michael Richardson hopes that the textbook will not be geared just for the AP test in May.

As of now, the MVHS Math Department is drafting up a list of textbooks from which the LAHS Math Department will then choose from.

Students for Haiti host Open Mic event

An open mic for Haiti was held on Friday, January 21 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Anyone could perform and the performances included poetry, singing and instrumental music. Tickets were $5 in advance and $8 at the door, and all the profits went directly to building the Society of Providence United for the Economic Development of Petion-Ville (SOPUDEP) school in Haiti.
The SOPUDEP school offers education for children and adults and a micro-credit program for women. Fifteen students from the club plan to travel to Haiti during the February break for about eight days to build the school.
“It was so cool to see local teens onstage for a good cause, performing things they had written or learned on their own,” junior Laura Delamare said.
