The Main Street Singers Alumni Concert, an opportunity for current Main Street Singers and alumni alike to sing together, has been postponed until next year. On Tuesday, December 9, Performing Arts Department Coordinator Mark Shaull sent an e-mail to singers and alumni announcing the postponement. However, the annual Wassail Party is still occurring this Saturday at Shoup Park at 7:30 p.m.

About 140 people were originally expected to participate in the alumni concert, which takes place every 4 to 5 years.

According to Shaull, the change was made because “many people who initially expressed interest are now unable to [get] back in time.”

Most of the alumni who were planning on coming back are currently attending college and it would have been difficult for everyone to be back by the concert date.
Instead, Shaull said that there would be a Main Street Singers 25th Anniversary Alumni Concert in December 2009.

“It’s too bad,” Shaull said. “But looking forward, I think [everything will be fine].”

Some plans have already been made for the concert next year. It will now take place on Sunday, December 20, 2009, after next year’s Wassail Party.

All alumni that participated in Main Street during their high school years were invited to participate in the concert. Many former Main Street Singers attend the Wassail Party each year. This year’s Wassail was to occur before the concert.

The concert was originally scheduled to take place at St. Nicholas Catholic Church on Lincoln Avenue in Los Altos. Students would go directly from Wassail to the concert at the church.

According to Shaull, most of the alumni did not have a problem with the concert’s postponement.

“I’m actually glad [it was postponed] because a lot of alumni had no idea the concert was even taking place [or] weren’t going to be back in time to participate,” Julia de Alcuaz ’08 said. “The cancellation works out for everyone basically.”

Julia also believes that the re-scheduling will also give the Main Street Singers time to advertise and make sure people have the event marked on their calendars.
Alumni, such as Sharon Peng ’07, agree that the concert’s postponement will work out for the better.

“I’ll definitely sing in it, whenever it happens,” Sharon said. “[But for now] I’m going to Wassail anyway.”
