Sra. Karow has asked for this message to be sent to the student body on her behalf. She wrote two versions of her message, one in English and one in Spanish, both of which appear below.

To my students and colleagues I would say the following:

This has been my darkest night without a doubt, the emotions are overwhelming and in a constant state of change. I wish I could walk back into my room & continue on as though all were normal (Spanish kids, this is a subjunctive sentence in English:-) Unfortunately & fortunately teaching is such a hard profession to hide your feelings so I’m not sure if I’m ready for that experience yet. I can say that I am deeply touched by the true greatness I find from the people in my life. I am in most ways a lucky person who has been surrounded in love, I am trying to keep that light burning bright in this time.

Please apologize to my students this year I know it has been a rough one, I will do my best to get back.

Para mis estudiantes, les diría lo siguiente:

Esta experiencia ha sido la más oscura que he vivido, las emociones me tumban como olas incontrolables y siempre están cambiando. Quisiera regresar a mi salón y continuar como si nada hubiera pasado. Afortunadamente y desafortunadamente ser maestra no me deja esconder tras una pared enfrente de una computadora y no sentir nada, verlos a la cara creo que me volvería loca con tantas emociones. Lo más probable es que los espantaría a Uds. con esta tormenta que llevo adentro y eso no quisiera que vieran en vivo. Puedo decirles por seguro que he tenido tanto amor y me ha conmovido tanto la cantidad y calidad de gente que me arrodea. Siempre puedo sentir este amor y estoy tratando de amarrarme a ello y dejar que la luz del mundo brille en mi de nuevo.

Favor de disculparme con mis alumnos este año, sé que ha sido difícil y regresaré tan pronto que pueda.
