The girls tennis team played Palo Alto High School (Paly) today and lost 3-4. Despite the defeat, the entire team put forth their best effort. This combined effort led to a very close matchup in which the Eagles almost came away with the win.

Three of the four singles players secured wins for the Eagles. Number two singles freshman Juliette Martin won 6-2, 6-1. Number three singles freshman Lili Kobayashi also won, with scores 6-0, 6-0. Number four singles freshman Carina Burdick won 6-2, 6-0.

The Eagles didn’t come up with any wins on the doubles side. However, this was not due to a lack of effort. All doubles teams showed their effort through improvement from previous matches.

“[The doubles teams] gave it their all,” Lili said. “Also, they changed their line-up since the last time we played them. The number one doubles … are having a neck-to-neck match and it could be anyone’s game.”

The number one doubles match resulted in an extremely narrow loss, with set scores of 5-7 and 6-7.

The match against Paly shows that while the team has things they know they must improve, the girls are progressively improving their skills and increasing their enthusiasm at the same time.

“I think as a team we should work more on team spirit, but each match brings our team closer together and we get mentally stronger,” Lili said.

Further improvement in both team bonding and skills will hopefully lead to future wins for the team. Though Paly may have come away from the match with a victory, the team is not disappointed in their performance.

“It was really close,” Lili said. “I think we gave it our all.”
