Girls Tennis Dominates SCVALS

The Lady Eagles dominated SCVALs on Wednesday, November 6. Their run of dominance in the tournament ultimately culminated in three placements in the competition: the team of senior Kacey Incerpi and junior Whitney Matthews took the doubles title while two sophomores, Juliette Martin and Carina Burdick, ended up second and third respectively for singles. Additionally, the seniors double team of Elizabeth Fuchs and Haley Jones won a round in the tournament.

“[We] really dominated SCVALs with getting first in doubles and second and third in singles,” Juliette said. “No other school had three placements in SCVALs.”

Some of the players attribute the dominant play during SCVALS to their four great single players who came out of the gate incredibly strong.

“During the regular season, the girls who play lower on the singles lineup never really got to play people who were at their level, so SCVALs gave them the opportunity to play against top people from all the schools,” Juliette said.

The Eagles dominance in SCVALs was indicative of the growth the team has experienced over the course of the regular season.

“At the beginning of the season, I will admit, I was not playing my best tennis,” Carina said. “But throughout the season, I got better with each match, and my streak continued into SCVALS. Although, I had a disappointing three set match against the #1 seed [that] could have gone either way.”

Juliette suggested that the adversity of the regular season has helped her grow monumentally as an athlete.

“I think this season has helped me with my mental game,” Juliette said. “I had to learn how to play with a lot of pressure because every math, I felt a ton of pressure since I play number 1 singles. I always felt that the whole team was counting on me to win my match since it was always very crucial for all of our singles to win.”

The team has its sights now set on capturing wins in the individual CCS tournament.

“Juliette should make it in, and possibly me as well in [CCS individuals] singles,” Carina said. “Also, Kacey and Whitney are guaranteed a spot in CCS individuals for doubles.”
