Girls Basketball Shines, Beats Homestead 41-39

The varsity girls basketball team faced a tough game against Homestead High School today, January 16. However, while both teams started the game with the same season record of 3-0, the Eagles won 41-39, leading in the league with a 4-0 record.

During the first quarter, Homestead took a fast lead of 11-2. However, the Eagles pulled through and started the final quarter with a tied score of 39-39.

“After analyzing their stats, we figured that beating them was completely possible,” senior Glenda Vargas said. “[However], during practice these last few days, coach [Kevin Lee] has been telling us to not overlook any team. During the game I was actually pretty worried because they were making all their three-pointers, but then we fixed our sloppiness in the second half by taking care of the ball more and relaxing.”

Both teams played a strong game, but the Eagles were careful to not get stressed or become overwhelmed by the intensity of the game.

“The intensity level throughout the whole game was really high,” Glenda said. “It was obvious that Homestead wanted that victory but we stayed calm and took it from them.”

Freshman Meg Enthoven scored a baseline shot that made the final score 41-39, securing the win for the Eagles. The team will play Cupertino High School this Friday.

“We are still undefeated in our league with a record of 4-0 making us first in our entire league,” Glenda said. “[For] our next game … against Cupertino, we expect an easier game. I think that after playing against Homestead, we’ve learned to be ready to fight through the entire game.”
