Varsity girls basketball defeated Mountain View 45–25, dominating all game on Friday, Jan. 30.
With the starting buzzer, the Eagles’ lead started. However, according to head coach Brittany Taylor, the Eagles experienced an unfocused and slow start, frequently losing the ball to the Spartans until picking up a rhythm later on.
“But once we got out of fumbling the ball all over the court, we were a really good team,” Brittany Taylor said. “The intensity on defense picked up a lot as well.”
Freshman Taylor Ware was a key player in the Eagles’ improved defense.
“In the second quarter, I felt down because I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to do,” Taylor Ware said. “But I picked it back up and got back to playing defense.”
To end the half, three 3-pointers — two by senior Chinglam Tseung and one by junior Chloe Caldbeck — pulled the Eagles further ahead.
“Every game has a new player that steps up — that’s what makes our team really special,” Brittany Taylor said.
In the second half, the Eagles widened their lead.
“The team locked in a little bit more in the 3rd quarter,” Brittany Taylor said. “We erased the first half and focused on what we needed to do — and it prevailed.”
By the final buzzer, their lead widened to 20 points, and the Eagles closed out the rivalry rematch 45–25.
“There’s nothing better than beating your hometown rival on your home court,” Brittany Taylor said. “Those experiences are what high school basketball is all about.”
The Eagles are now 17–3 overall and 8–1 in the De Anza League. They are currently in second place, and will qualify for the CCS (Division 1) playoffs if they hold their ranking.
“It was a statement game; we really set the tone,” Chinglam said. “I feel like we have a great chance in CCS.”
Propelled by previous victories, losing only one league game this season, Brittany Taylor continues to set high ambitions for the Eagles.
“Now it’s just about improving and getting better at each game,” Brittany Taylor said. “So we can win the league and then prepare well for the playoffs.”
The Eagles will face the Fremont Firebirds next on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Fremont High School.
