Girls Basketball CCS Recap

Leland

On Thursday night, February 27, the girls basketball team took on the Leland Chargers at home in the second round of the CCS playoffs.

“The focus was definitely [on having] no turnovers,” sophomore Rachel Glein said. “We were also really focused on box-outs and keeping the other team to just one shot per possession.”

After a fast-paced first quarter and both teams trading baskets, the quarter ended with the Eagles down 13-16. However, the Eagles slowly started to take off and managed to create a seven point lead going into halftime.

The Eagles continued to have momentum on their side as they headed into the third quarter, making basket after basket while also getting defensive stops. This cohesiveness created a lead as high as 15 points and from there the girls did not look back. The Eagles closed the game strong, holding off a late burst from Leland. The Chargers’ comeback effort was too little too late as the Eagles took the game 61-56.

“We played well together and our shots were falling,” Rachel said. “Near the end of the game, Leland got the score so they were only losing by four, but we held them off.”

St. Francis
With this win, Los Altos advanced to CCS quarterfinals, where they faced off against the top seeded Saint Francis Lancers on Saturday, March 1. After a competitive first quarter, the team was within two points, as they prepared for a second quarter attack. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse.

“We were pretty even in the first quarter, but they pulled ahead in the second, and with our lack of subs, we couldn’t catch up and fell way behind,” Rachel said.

With junior Rebecca Andrews and senior Malika Kaderali both already out with a knee and ankle injury, respectively, and two of the team’s leading scorers, co-captain senior Meghan McDermott and sophomore guard Katie Munro sustaining in-game injuries, Los Altos could not answer any of the Lancers moves and fell 38-60.

But with the season now over, the girls can look back this season as an impressive one, one which saw them train under a new head coach, Jaclyn Brode, win the Kings Academy Tournament in the pre-season, go on a 14-game winning streak, take second place in league and make a second straight appearance in CCS quarterfinals. The Eagles have plenty to celebrate this year as the program continues to grow and looks to improve for next year.
