Bubba Gump vs. E-lemon-ators (3-0 Bubba Gump)
Bubba Gump slaughtered E-lemon-ators 3-0, catching nearly every one of E-lemon-ator’s throws from the get-go. E-lemon-ators were down 2 players to Bubba Gump’s five after only 50 seconds of playing time. The first game ended after 1:11, with games two and three ending in similarly. Senior Victor Ruiz’s catching prowess was on display throughout.

Game three of the matchup ended with 30 seconds left in the 5 minute playing period and a fourth game was not pursued. Bubba Gump advances and plays the Fruit Fighters on Tuesday, May 20, in round two of the tournament.

300 Dark Squad vs. Jazz Hands (3-0 300 Dark Squad)
Jazz Hands simply couldn’t compete with 300 Dark Squad today, falling 3-0 in a rout. Though senior Allie Barreira was able to hold her own as the last player standing in games two and three of the matchup, 300 Dark Squad simply overpowered Jazz Hands. 300 Dark Squad advances and plays Past Our Prime on Tuesday, May 20, in round two of the tournament.

Court B:
Average Throws vs. Volunteer Team (2-1 Average Throws)
Hannonball did not show against Average Throws, a freshman team. Instead, a team consisting of volunteers from the stands (seniors Ryan Elson, James Sobrino, Kevin Lynch, freshman Tonga Keti) took Hannonball’s spot and faced off against Average Throws.

Average Throws and the team consisting of volunteers each took one game. Average Throws held on to win in the final seconds of the third game by having more players standing.

Average Throws advances and will face off against Short Bicka on Tuesday, May 20, in round two of the tournament. Hannonball will play on the final day of first-round games on Monday, May 19.

Peedo Encendido vs. The Bop Squad (3-0 Peedo Encendido)
Peedo Encendido and The Bop Squad’s game was another showdown between seniors and freshmen, respectively.

Though Bop Squad looked like it had taken control of the first game just a minute in, senior Carlos Rivera made two clutch catches in a row to turn the tide. Peedo Encendido picked off Bop Squad one by one until only freshman Jacob Quevedo remained standing. Though Jacob was able to make a save, he couldn’t get the rest of his team back into the game.

Carlos continued to be a dominant force on the court, sniping three of Bop Squad’s players down in a row early in game two and leading Bop Squad to an easy 2-0 win.

Game three ended in a similar fashion, with Bop Squad’s Jay Quevedo being left the last man standing again.

Peedo Encendido advances and will play Three Hunna Squad on Tuesday, May 20, in round two of the tournament.

Fruit Fighters vs. Can’t Dodge This (2-1 via Sudden Death)
The Fruit Fighters-Can’t Dodge This game was yet another senior team-freshman team matchup. Both teams took one game apiece, forcing a sudden death game. In sudden death, the team of the first person to be eliminated loses.

Senior Konrad Niemiec made the catch just seconds into sudden death to take the win for the Fruit Fighters.

The Fruit Fighters advance and play Bubba Gump on Tuesday, May 20, in round two of the tournament.

Byes
Past Our Prime, a team consisting of seniors Sam Lisbonne, Jordan Stout, Ryan Seltzer, Surya Ram, Kimberyln Tilley and mathematics teacher Matt Chaffee, received a first round bye. Past Our Prime automatically advances and plays 300 Dark Squad on Tuesday, May 20, in round two of the tournament.
