Countdown to Christmas Day One: Drinking from the Wrong Bottle

The holiday season brings about all types of memories. To start off this countdown to Christmas, I thought of no better way than to share a memory of my own holiday seasons.
Every year, my family of four travels to Portland, Oregon where we celebrate Christmas with my mom’s side of the family at my grandparent’s house. As my family shares both Jewish and Christian traditions, we always celebrate not only Christmas, but Hanukah.

About five years ago, Hanukah overlapped with our time in Oregon; this hasn’t happened in a long time. As my grandparents had never had a traditional Hanukah celebration before, we figured that we would share our traditions with them. We made latkes and lit the menorah, both Hanukah musts.

After we made the latkes, there was a great deal of excess grease which needs to cool down before we could throw it away. We decided to store the grease in an old coke bottle. My grandpa’s habit of leaving half finished coke cans in the fridge led to him making a costly mistake. He took a giant swig of the can full of grease which was quickly followed by him spitting it out in disgust in the sink.

Needless to say, we are no longer allowed to make latkes in my grandparents’ house.

My grandpa’s horrific memory will always be one that I can look back and smile on. Happy holidays and here is to many more memories.
