Boys Water Polo Fall to Gunn 13-11, Defeat Mountain View 11-9

The boys water polo team played both Gunn and Mountain View in the SCVAL League Championships this weekend. Both games proved to be highly competitive; the Eagles were defeated by Gunn on Friday, November 8, and won against Mountain View on Saturday, November 9.

Friday’s game against Gunn started off with a 6-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Eagles came back to tie it 7-7 at the half. Although the second quarter proved strong, the team was down again 9-7 at the end of the third quarter.

“We gave [Gunn] too much of a lead again, which wasn’t good,” junior Bryan Kim said. “It was too hard come back from that.”

Captain senior Sam Lisbonne led the team with five goals, followed by senior Ryan Seltzer and junior Sean Nguyen with two, and senior Jordan Stout and junior Bryan Kim with one.

With goalie junior Dane Grosvenor, out with a concussion, the goal was manned by senior Derrick Lu for both games. Although Derrick managed to block goals successfully, the loss of Dane was taxing in the Eagles’ game with Gunn, where they lost 13-11.

“Derrick had to step up,” Bryan said. “Derrick isn’t a goalie and has been training as a field player for four years, which made [defense] much harder.”

Despite the team’s loss, Saturday’s game against the Mountain View Spartans was a success: the Eagles won 11-9.

The Eagles and Spartans kept the score close throughout the game, consistently tying each other and vying for a lead. Although close, the Eagles pulled out in the final quarter, winning the game and securing their spot as third in the league.

As the season comes to a close, the Eagles will play in DI CCS against Leland High School either this Tuesday or Wednesday in single elimination games.
