Boys Water Polo Defeats Homestead and Los Gatos in SCVAL Tournament

The boys water polo team began its end of the season with the SCVAL tournament yesterday, November 1. It started off strong by beating Homestead High School 15-3 on Thursday and continued on its winning spree, beating Los Gatos High School 14-7 today, November 2.

The team got off to a slow start against Los Gatos. Los Gatos High School had previously beaten Palo Alto High School and was very confident going into the game. At the end of the first quarter, LAHS tied the game up 3-3.

“We got off to a slow start, but after the first quarter, we started working as a team and were able to finish it off,” senior Dom Gachina said.

Although the team was playing with one of their starters out sick, Paul Bergevin, it still managed to play strong defense, especially in the last three quarters. In addition, the goals they scored were relatively spaced out throughout the team.

Captain senior Ian McColl was the lead scorer with a total of four goals while junior Jordan Stout scored three. In addition, senior Mark Schreiber and junior Sam Lisbonne both scored two goals.

The team will play Mountain View High School tomorrow in the final championship game at 5:40 p.m. at Homestead High School.

“We have a big game against Mountain View and this year we’ve struggled against them because we’ve lost to them twice,” Dom said. “This is a perfect opportunity to get redemption and maintain our status as league champions.”

The team is hoping for a win tomorrow, especially against Mountain View, which will set them up to play successfully in CCS.

“We were hungry to play Mountain View again in the final, and the only way we were gonna do that was to beat Los Gatos, so we did,” Dom said.
