Boys Soccer Cruises to Easy 3-0 Victory over Visiting Santa Clara

Boys soccer throttled Santa Clara 3-0 at home on Wednesday, January 26, though the visiting Bruins were lucky to keep the score even that close.

The Eagles dominated, keeping possession of the ball for the majority of the game. This allowed them to be on the offensive throughout. Their constant pressure led to many scoring opportunities that the Eagles capitalized on, though some unfortunately didn’t count towards the final score.

Sophomore Sean McLoughlin was the first to get the ball in the net, but the goal was called back due to a collision between Sean and Santa Clara’s goalie, that left Sean injured on the bench for the rest of the game.

Despite the loss of a key player, the Eagles offense didn’t let up and senior Juan Morales scored the first goal of the game.

Shortly after, junior Harry Rojas out jumped a Santa Clara defender and headed the ball into the net. Unfortunately, another ball was rolled back onto the field at the same time, causing a large controversy, and the goal was not counted.

Going into the second half, the Eagles held their 1-0 lead. Following an Eagles corner kick, the ball bounced between players attempting to score. Senior Mat Snider eventually scored but was called off sides, and a third goal was taken back.

Not discouraged, junior James Connor scored the second goal of the game off of a dangerous cross. But before the Eagle’s fans could settle down from celebrating James’s goal, Juan took control of a punt from junior goalie Lucas Champenois and raced down the field for a breakaway goal, his second and the team’s third.

The Eagles held their lead for the remainder of the game, adding yet another win to their solid 3-2-1 league record for the season.
