Boys basketball falls to Los Gatos High School

In a rematch between LAHS (6-3) and Los Gatos High School (7-2), Los Gatos again pulled away with a last-second victory, yesterday, Friday, February 5. The Eagles varsity boys team was defeated 55-51 by the visiting Wildcats.

The game began with a high-tempo pace, which caused the Eagles to turn over the ball and take forced shots in the first quarter.

“We need to have better passes,” senior Spencer Wells said. “We weren’t passing very well and some people were forcing dribbling so it got really hectic and rushed.”

In the second quarter, the Eagles’ defense played a higher-pressure game, allowing Los Gatos to score only eight points in the quarter. Stronger defense kept the game close for the Eagles. By halftime, LAHS was within 7.

To begin the second half, the Eagles simplified their game. More consistent passing led to the Eagles scoring more shots. LAHS ended the third quarter down 33-39 and looked to build off the intensity of the third quarter to play a strong final frame.

“Their starting five might be better than our starting five, [so that is] why we have a slow start,” junior Scott Yuan said. “The reason that we’re able to get back in the game and rally back [in the second half] is that we have a deep bench.”

In the fourth quarter, LAHS fell to a nine-point deficit early only to pull even with a couple of minutes left in the game.

The crowd was the Eagles’ biggest of the season, and the large showing of both home and away fans meant lots of opposing cheers.

“There’s pressure, but the crowd really just helps,” senior Sammy Meckler said. “They make us want to play better.”

Los Gatos’s free throws and three-point shots contributed to their ultimate victory. LAHS will play three more games in the regular season.
