Art Department Hosts First Art Week

The school’s first art week took place this week, December 2-6. The Art Department designed the weeklong event to give students an opportunity to learn about the many applications of art in the modern world.

“I think the event is going well so far,” said Art Department coordinator Christine An. “It is very helpful for students taking art classes. We have been working to put together the event for about two months.”

The three part event was composed of professional artist talks in the Eagle Theatre, a student art show and a social installation on visual thinking.

On Wednesday and Thursday, art students had the opportunity to attend presentations by professional artists during their art classes. Speakers included Yana Mlynash, an Interior Designer and Co-owner of Design Co-working space, Chris Fung, a Visual Effects Artist and 3-D Graphic Artist, and Jacqueline Norheim, a Fine Artist.

Over 500 pieces of original student art were on display in the library Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Faculty members always have positive comments about seeing student art show,” An Said. “They are amazed to see so much artistic talent at LAHS”.

On Thursday and Friday, the library conference room was transformed into a visual art installation. Students and faculty had the opportunity to contribute their own thoughts in the form of drawings on small pieces of paper on the subject of “injuries who need healing”. The goal of the installation was to create a dynamic, cooperative piece of art that depicts the healing process.

The Art Department is excited about the event’s success, and hopes to host similar events in the future with varying topics.
