Amnesty Hosts Benefit

This school’s chapter of Amnesty International held an open-mic Jamnesty night last Friday, April 24 from 5-7 p.m. at the Red Rock Café in downtown Mountain View. While turnout was low according to senior Claire Bedard, the event had many new performers along with some old.
Among the new players was English teacher Ryan Ikeda and senior Madison Freeman, both of whom performed a poem they had written. Regular participants such as Claire and senior Victoria Valles also performed.
Around the middle of the line-up, social studies teacher Seth Donnelly took time to inform the crowd of Amnesty’s latest cause—bringing medical aid to a prison in Haiti. Last week, according to Amnesty club president senior Mandeep Chahal, Donnelly and Ikeda traveled to Haiti to see the prison in person.
Near the end of the night, Mandeep and vice president senior Kiran Rishi passed around a petition that urged the Haitian government to allow Amnesty and other aid-distributors in to help the prisoners and asked guests to sign it and donate to the cause. Amnesty raised $98.06 that night.
Currently no other Jamnesty nights have been planned for the future.
