Yesterday, the varsity boys soccer team soundly defeated the Fremont High School Firebirds 4–1 — the team’s second league win of the season.
Senior co-captain Kapil Jakatdar put the Eagles on the board 1–0 in the first minute of the game, giving the team early match momentum. Shortly after, however, Fremont responded with a goal of its own, tying the game and putting pressure on Los Altos.
“As players, we’re definitely always on the same page,” Kapil said. “At times, it can get rocky, but we always find our way back together.”
Fremont received its first yellow card after a brief run-in between Kapil and Fremont defense. Senior Raymond Liu took a penalty kick, but missed just shy of the goal post.
“It was a little bit of a sloppy start with the direction and passes, but we still came together to finish business,” senior Dylan Kovarcik said.
But the Eagles didn’t let up — 20 minutes in, junior Dylan Po’s shot found the back of the net, putting Los Altos at a 2–1 lead. With strong defensive play, no more goals were scored in the first half.
The Firebirds persisted for most of the second half, challenging the Eagles’ defense and pushing into Los Altos territory.
The Eagles pulled away after junior Eddy Lemus added another point to the board, extending the score to 3–1. Kapil capped off the game with his second goal of the night, securing Los Altos’ victory.
Despite their resounding victory, the team acknowledges they still have room for improvement, ideas echoed by Head Coach Roberto Magellan.
“There were moments where we actually lost the ball and allowed the other team to score and come back,” Magellan said. “Some of the passes could have been a little bit faster because I know we can pass well, and as a coach, I always have to find something to improve to better our team.”
The Eagles now have an overall league record of 6–2–3 and league record of 2–1–1. The team will travel to face Santa Clara High School tomorrow at 6 p.m.
