STEAM Week at Los Altos High School is celebrating its 20th anniversary on Monday, October 14, through Friday, October 18. On top of featured speakers, student STEAM clubs also have a chance to be showcased, along with students from Capstone and Advanced Science Investigations (ASI) classes.
STEAM speakers will present a variety of presentations, ranging from talks in the Eagle Theater to in depth class discussions. The event is organized by a team of parent led volunteers and Robotics teacher Stephen Hine, who have all been coordinating this year’s event since March. Teachers are able to bring students to presentations in the Eagle Theater, or have the chance for speakers to come directly to the classrooms to conduct focused discussions in groups.
“I was passionate about bringing diverse speakers in for our students,” Co-lead parent Kara Calhoun explains. “We’re trying to inspire and invigorate the next generation students to figure out what they’re passionate about.”
By allowing students to showcase their work, the planning committee amplified student voices and talents along with decorated speakers.
“We wanted to bring in all the talents that our school and our own students have,” Co-lead parent Dora Yuen said. “More celebration of all the good work the students are doing.”
“Everyone has STEAM in their lives,” Hine said. “Even if you think you aren’t a scientist, mathematician, or engineer, you’re using scientific principles in your daily life.”
