New Coaches Named For Winter Season
JV girls soccer team recently lost its longtime coach Jon Hayman after he unexpectedly quit his position. Hayman, a history teacher at Egan Middle School, could not put in the time to coach this season. According to Athletic Director Kim Cave, the school is in the process of looking for a new coach. Math teacher Theresa Nesmith will be co-coach along with the coach that they will hire.

Girls soccer was not the only team to lose a coach for the upcoming season. Wrestling lost its head coach, Marty Matthews. While he still helps frequently and attends almost every practice, he decided he could not make the full commitment to coaching the team. Wrestling will be coached by Randolph Jimenez, who has been involved with the wrestling program.

Jacob Jackson will be coaching girls varsity basketball, taking over for Scott Green. Jackson previously coached the girls team at Saint Francis.

Pumpkin Sales Help Fund Athletic Boosters
The Athletic Boosters’ main fundraiser has been the pumpkin patch located in the student parking lot for than 20 years. The pumpkin patch is run by parents and other volunteers.

The pumpkin patch began selling pumpkins on Friday, October 12, until Halloween. Pumpkins ranging from $5 to $15 were purchased to helps support the Athletic Boosters’ general fund. The general fund helps pay for uniforms and equipment for all sports teams.

Over 2,000 pumpkins were brought to the pumpkin patch this year and each one was sold prior to Halloween. According to pumpkin patch co-coordinator Karen Plank, the closing of the Grant Road pumpkin patch led to increased sales this year.

Varsity Baseball Team Joins Autumn League
Members of the varsity baseball team are participating in a fall league hosted by Santa Clara University. While it is not mandatory, about 15 of the usual 17 to 18 players are participating in preparation for the spring season.

Many local teams including Archbishop Mitty High School and Saint Francis High School also participate in the league. Since it is run by Santa Clara University, it allows players to attend clinics run by the university that help players improve on their technique.

Games are every week on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday at Schott Stadium at Santa Clara University. The Eagles’ record is currently 1-4.
