Austin O’Such
Baseball
The middle of the varsity baseball’s lineup is a formidable one, anchored by the O’Such brothers. Though sophomore Nolan is having a commendable season, captain senior Austin has been the Eagles’ main power plug. With a .370 average and a team-leading 4 homeruns and 18 RBIs, Austin’s return has been crucial to the Eagles’ offense.
“[Lead-off hitters junior] Mat [Snider] and [freshman] Steven [McLean] get on base a lot and it’s my job to drive them in,” Austin said. “I’m going to be challenged every game … I just try to stay in a zone I’m comfortable with.”
Austin, who plans to walk on at the University of San Francisco next year, says he has tried to contribute in other ways to the Eagles’ quest for CCS even though he has been in a slump.
“My goal is to have the rest of the team say, ‘Yeah, Austin may not have hit that well today, but he made it up with his defense,’” Austin said.
Erica Hicks
Gymnastics
Senior Erica Hicks started gymnastics and has been participating in competitions since first grade. Since then, she has enjoyed her high school experience as a break from competitive gymnastics at Gold Star Gym.
“High school gymnastics is really special,” Erica said. “It’s all about having fun, keeping the sport alive and giving everyone the chance to go out there and do their best regardless of experience.”
Erica has received the MVP award for gymnastics in her freshman and junior years.
“[Gymnastics] has defined who I am,” Erica said. “I am proud of myself for competing level nine this past season.”
Erica looks forward to continuing her gymnastics career next year.
“[After] talking to several colleges, I hope to walk onto the varsity team,” Erica said.
