After an incredibly successful fall sports season with CCS championship titles from girls tennis in Open Division, boys water polo in Division I, and boys cross country in Division II, winter sports have some tough competition. Here’s a breakdown of girls basketball, boys soccer, and wrestling as they push through the second half of the season.
Varsity boys’ soccer is turning heads with an 8–2–1 record, currently ranking second in the league. The Eagles hit their stride mid-season with a three-game win streak, dominating Fremont, Santa Clara, and Wilcox before a narrow 3–2 loss to Palo Alto, and haven’t lost a league game since. Co-captain senior Connor Salita anchors the defense and recently announced his commitment to Colorado College, while sophomore Walter Guzman leads the offense with six goals this season. Forward senior Kapil Jakatar is the team’s top playmaker, leading with eleven assists so far. With Coach Roberto Magellan’s 20 years of experience and many solid contributors on the squad, it’ll be interesting to see how Magellan will pivot during CCS.
Varsity girls basketball is facing a rocky path having lost seven of their last nine games. Currently ranked fifth in the league, this team needs to convert. Junior Ella McFarlane is making a splash in her third year playing varsity basketball. She dropped a career-high 33 points against Homestead, shooting 14-of-32 from the field, along with career highs in deflections, steals, and blocks. Averaging 15 points and five rebounds per game, this two-sport athlete is having a stellar season. Freshman Chloe D’Amico has also stepped up, averaging eight rebounds per game to fill the gap left by last year’s two graduating post players. While the team has easily made CCS in years past, they’ll need to deliver against every single remaining opponent in the coming weeks to have a shot to compete.
Finally, wrestling. The team is grappling with a rebuilding year with new Head Coach Tyler Caledron at the helm. The boys’ squad consists of nearly 30 members, but the girls’ side struggles to maintain numbers, with many quitting before the season began. Both teams recently competed in the Lynbrook Challenge Tournament, although few made it past the second round. It’s been a challenging season, but there’s always potential for a strong foundation moving forward.
That’s all for now, Eagles. Stay tuned for more updates as the season unfolds, and don’t forget to catch these teams in action.
