The Scouting Report is back with some hard stats. This edition focuses on Los Altos High School varsity girls volleyball, led by 13-year Head Coach Peter Kim, and includes a play-by-play of some of its top players.
Starting off, we have junior Aviya Russo, an outside hitter with killer stats (literally). She’s got a whopping 129 kills this season, averaging 5.2 per set. Aviya’s skill hasn’t gone unnoticed; Aviya officially verbally announced her Division I (DI) commitment to Texas Tech in mid-September. As a player who has never failed to perform since debuting on varsity her freshman year, it was clear Los Altos would have a DI commit on the roster.
Another player who leads total blocks and hitting percentage is middle-blocker junior Ella McFarlane. She’s a two-sport varsity athlete, dedicating herself to varsity basketball during the winter season. With total commitment and focus, Ella maintains a 0.286 hitting percentage and 23 total blocks this season.
One more player who clears in stats is senior setter Sophia Costa. Whilst most of her teammates sit at 18 and 17 assists, she has accumulated a staggering 360. Sophia isn’t just a great setter but a captain as well, recently being nominated as Player of the Match in Los Altos’s hard-fought win against Mountain View Spartans last Thursday, September 26.
To finish off, libero junior Ana Heath has been showing her talent coming off the bench from last season and cooking on the court. Ana leads with 4.3 digs per set, 124 total digs, and 183 receptions this season.
But we can’t judge a team from three players, so let’s analyze their stats as a whole. Los Altos currently ranks sixth in the De Anza League, with 6 wins and 7 losses overall. On the bright side, Los Altos recently beat their rivals, the Mountain View Spartans, last Thursday, September 26 in an extremely close match. However, with only eight league games left, the Eagles must win roughly four or five more matches to contend for a spot in the CCS playoffs. This isn’t an easy feat, but with Los Altos’s talent, anything’s possible.
Signing off,
