Peace, unity, respect. These are the values the Latino Student Union (LSU) plans to celebrate during PURLA (Peace, Unity, Respect Los Altos) Day on Monday, October 2.
“Our advisors made the decision to call the week PURLA Day because it represents some of the values that the Los Altos community has,” LSU president junior Jocelyn Gatica Arellano said.
PURLA is a day-long event on campus during Hispanic Heritage Month, with games and events during brunch and lunch. PURLA Day has a history in Los Altos, but hasn’t been hosted recently. However, LSU plans to bring it back this year.
“Our adviser, Mr. Rojas, says it has been going on since forever, but we just haven’t done it in the past few years,” Jocelyn said. “It’s supposed to happen during Hispanic Heritage Month.”
LSU will host events in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, including a Hispanic food fair and mariachi band this Thursday, September 28, in collaboration with the Associated Student Body (ASB).
“ASB outreach tries to collaborate with one heritage club every month,” LSU vice president and ASB outreach associate junior Sophia Diaz Lopez said. “So when it came to Hispanic Heritage Month, ASB outreach really wanted to collaborate with LSU,”
“We’ll have delicious food from different Hispanic countries. For example, pupusas, aguas frescas and tinga,” Jocelyn said.
